Many food companies focus on sealing and moisture protection when packaging, but often overlook light, which is a hidden threat. Light-blocking packaging bags are designed to address this issue: they use structures such as aluminum foil, metallized layers, or light-blocking inks to block ultraviolet rays, protecting the color, aroma, taste, and nutritional value of the contents. This article explains from a factory perspective the destructive mechanism of ultraviolet light on food and which products must use light-blocking packaging bags.
How ultraviolet light damages food quality
Light damage to food is mainly caused by the ultraviolet spectrum, especially the wavelength range of 200–400 nanometers. Its destructive effects are manifested in three aspects:
The first is lipid oxidation. Unsaturated fatty acids in nuts, potato chips, and meat products accelerate oxidation under ultraviolet light, producing a rancid taste. This is why fried foods in transparent bags tend to develop off-flavors more easily. The second is nutrient loss. Vitamins A, C, and riboflavin are highly sensitive to light. Prolonged exposure to light through transparent bottles causes a significant reduction in their content in milk and juice. The third is pigment fading. Natural pigments such as chlorophyll and anthocyanins break down when exposed to light, causing tea, coffee, and condiments to lose color quickly, turning pale or yellow, which directly reduces their shelf appeal.
Experimental data shows that the same food stored in transparent packaging under light for one month may have oxidation indicators equivalent to those stored in light-blocking packaging for more than three months. In other words, light oxidation is a common hidden cause of shortened shelf life for food, and light-blocking packaging bags are the most direct solution.
Which products must use light-proof packaging bags
Not all food products require light protection, but the following categories are recommended to prioritize:
High-fat products, including nuts, coffee beans, fried snacks, pet food, and some meat products, have their shelf life determined by lipid oxidation. Second, foods rich in natural pigments, such as green tea, flower tea, goji berries, and various dried vegetables, can maintain their appearance by avoiding light exposure. Third, dairy products and fruit juices, which contain light-sensitive vitamins and flavor compounds, often use light-protective packaging, as many premium milks already do. Fourth, medicines and health supplements, whose active ingredients are sensitive to light, are typically required by pharmacopoeias to be stored in light-protected conditions.
If your product falls into one of the above categories but is still using transparent or semi-transparent packaging, then short shelf life and high return rates may not be due to the formula, but rather the wrong packaging choice. Structure and Material Selection of Light-Blocking Packaging Bags
Light shielding effect depends on the packaging structure. Common solutions include three types:
The first type is an aluminum foil composite structure, such as PET/AL/PE, with a near 100% light-blocking rate and excellent oxygen and moisture barrier properties, making it suitable for high preservation requirement products like coffee and nuts. However, it has a relatively higher cost. The second type is a metallized film structure, such as PET/VMPET/PE, with a light-blocking rate over 90%, lower cost than pure aluminum foil, and suitable for products with moderate preservation requirements. The third type is white ink or light-blocking ink printing, where white or light-blocking layers are printed on the inner transparent film, offering the lowest cost and suitable for products with low light-blocking requirements.
In addition to the light-blocking layer, consider heat-seal performance, printability, and stiffness. If the product needs to be opened repeatedly, you can pair it with a zipper or a stand-up bottom to balance freshness and convenience. Notes for Custom Light-Blocking Packaging Bags
When customizing light-blocking packaging bags, several details are often overlooked: first, the position of the light-blocking layer should be as close to the contents as possible, rather than on the outer layer, to prevent printed ink and adhesive residues from coming into direct contact with food, which could pose a migration risk; second, light transmission rate testing is essential, and reputable factories use ultraviolet spectrophotometers to measure the light transmission rate of the packaging; when purchasing, you can request the factory to provide test data; third, structural balance is important, as stronger light-blocking performance usually means more layers and higher costs. It is necessary to make reasonable choices based on the product’s shelf life goals to avoid excessive packaging.
It is recommended to conduct a simulated light exposure test during the sample stage: place the sample in the product and store it under simulated shelf light conditions for 2-4 weeks, compare color differences and flavor changes, and use data to confirm whether the light protection scheme meets the standards.
