Custom Nozzle Bag Guide: Bag Type, Material, and Process Selection for Sauces, Juices, and Personal Care Liquid Packaging

When producing liquid products such as sauces, concentrated juices, and laundry detergents, the two most common pitfalls in packaging selection are: first, using standard stand-up bags for filling, which result in leakage from the side seal during transportation; second, selecting an incompatible spout, leading to frequent bag explosions on the filling line. The solution to both issues points to the same type of bag — the spout bag. In recent years, the adoption rate of spout bags in the food and household chemical industries has significantly increased. The reason is straightforward: they save on storage and shipping costs compared to bottles, are more convenient than ordinary flexible packaging, and allow consumers to easily squeeze out the contents by twisting the spout open, and then twist it back on when not in use. This article, based on actual production order experience, clearly explains the key decision points for customizing spout bags.

The basic structure of a suction bag consists of two separate processes: the bag body and the nozzle.

Many buyers mistakenly consider the spout bag as just a type of bag, which can lead to misunderstandings. Strictly speaking, a spout bag consists of three parts: the body, the spout, and the lid. The body is made of composite film, while the spout and lid are separately injection-molded hard plastic components that are then heat-sealed onto the body. In other words, you are actually purchasing products from two separate supply chains: one for the printing, lamination, and bag-making of the composite film, and another for the mold development and injection molding of the spout.

The structure determines the pricing logic. The price of the bag body varies according to the number of printed colors and the number of composite layers. The price of the nozzle depends on the diameter specification and the type of cap. Common nozzle diameters on the market range from 8.6mm to 28mm. For high-viscosity products such as jams and honey, it is recommended to choose a larger diameter to avoid consumer frustration from difficulty in squeezing; for juices and flavor oils, a smaller diameter is better for controlling the flow.

Material selection should be determined first by the contents and then by the sterilization process.

The bag body material logic for the nozzle bag is consistent with that of ordinary flexible packaging, with the core focus on the balance between barrier properties and heat-sealing performance. Common combinations include three types: PET/PE is suitable for short-term distribution of ambient temperature products; PET/AL/PE or PET metallized/PE is suitable for oxygen-sensitive juice concentrates and light-sensitive sauces; structures containing a PA layer, such as PET/PA/PE, are used for products requiring pasteurization or high-temperature filling. For the functions of each layer in composite films, you can refer to our previous summary.Composite Packaging Process Overview。

One point that is often overlooked is that the nozzle itself is typically made of PE or PP material. When welding, the melting point of the nozzle must be lower than or equal to the heat-seal layer of the bag’s inner layer. If the bag uses an inner layer like CPP, which requires high-temperature sterilization, standard nozzles cannot be welded properly. In such cases, a high-temperature resistant nozzle must be customized, which increases the cost. Therefore, the material selection should be confirmed clearly with the factory during the quotation stage to avoid discovering insufficient welding strength after sample production.

Nozzle Position and Bag Type Compatibility

The nozzle can be placed at the top corner of the bag or centered at the top of the bag body. The slanted nozzle is the mainstream option on the market, offering a larger opening and higher efficiency during filling. The top-mounted nozzle provides a more neat appearance, making it suitable for products with a gift box positioning. The bag body can be optionally equipped with a self-standing bottom or a flat-bottom structure. It is important to note that for large-capacity spout bags over 1L, higher requirements are placed on bag body rigidity and sealing width. The sealing width is typically widened from the standard 8mm to over 10mm. Otherwise, the full bag drop test will be difficult to pass. The drop test (1.2-meter drop on all six sides when fully loaded) is a common inspection item during quality checks. It is recommended to include this in the purchase contract.

Which products are suitable for mouth-blown bags?

From our order data, we see that the demand for mouthpiece bags is concentrated in four categories: seasoning sauces (ketchup, chili sauce, salad sauce), beverage concentrates (concentrated fruit juice, coffee concentrate), infant food, and household products (laundry detergent, hand sanitizer, shampoo refill). Among these, household product refills have been the fastest-growing segment in recent years. Regulatory pressure in Europe and the US to reduce plastic usage has led many brands to replace rigid bottles with flexible refill bags.Commercial Logic Analysis of Eco-Friendly PackagingThere is relevant background information. Unsuitable situations should be clearly stated: products with internal pressure, such as carbonated beverages, are not recommended for use in valve bags, as internal pressure may cause long-term stress on the sealing edge. For sauces containing large solid particles, the diameter of the filling pipeline should be evaluated to avoid blockage during the filling process.

Three Things to Confirm with the Factory Before Customization

First, the filling method. Is it manual filling or machine filling? Machine filling requires specific tolerance control for the nozzle diameter and flatness of the bag mouth. Poor tolerance control can lead to a significant drop in sealing efficiency after the nozzle is installed. Second, the minimum order quantity. Since the nozzle bag includes additional injection-molded parts, the minimum order quantity is usually higher than that of a standard self-standing bag. The factory needs to amortize the cost of keeping nozzle inventory. Third, the sealing test plan. In addition to the standard edge sealing strength test, the nozzle welding area should undergo separate tensile and vacuum tests. These two areas are high-risk zones for leakage.

Discuss these three questions thoroughly during the quotation stage, and you can save at least one to two sample rounds, saving both time and sample costs, which are real expenses.

Summary

The value of a spout bag lies in extending the cost advantage of flexible packaging to liquid products, but it also requires higher standards in structural design and process coordination compared to ordinary bags. When selecting, remember the main principle: product characteristics determine the material, filling method determines the spout specification, and sales channels determine the bag size.
